Family Photo Session: What Do I Wear?
Family photo sessions are always so much fun! Not only do you all come together to share some laughs, smiles and hugs, but you'll leave the day with something to remember it by forever.
However, choosing coordinating outfits for a photo session can be a NIGHTMARE! We've all seen the photos where everyone from grandpa down to the newest baby are all matching. Or what about that one aunt who chooses red when everyone else is going with neutral tones?
There are a few tips that I share with all of my clients before their photo session.
1) Coordinate, Don't Match!
Many people assume that matching outfits are the way to go. After all, they all coordinate if they all match, right? Nope! Although this used to be a common practice, I always recommend coordinating your outfits instead.
2) Choose A Color Scheme
This goes hand in hand with our first point about coordination. Choose a color palette that is complementary and have each person choose a color. Its okay if a few people choose the same color, just be sure to mix it up!
Are you unsure about where to start? There is plenty of inspiration on the web. Head over to Pinterest and look through color palettes. Or better yet, browse through my Facebook page and find inspiration from what my other clients have chosen in the past.
3) Pick Patterns and Prints
After you have chosen your color scheme, don't be afraid to mix up a few patterns or prints along with the solid colors. This can be a fun way to add visual interest. Not to mention, if you have that "fun" relative who loves to express themselves, they can do so while also fitting in with the theme!
Just keep in mind, you should have a healthy balance between patterns and solid colors. Too many patterns are distracting.
4) Don't Forget To Accessorize
Accessories are a fun way to add a little pop of color or personal flair to your photo session theme.
Hats, scarves and ties are a good place to start. I love being able to use these accessories during the session to help you pose more comfortably.
5) Check The Forecast
This may seem like an obvious point, but you need to plan for the weather. If the weather is going to be chilly, plan your outfit around cute winter coats and warm gloves!
Although we all love a guy in a suit, 90 degree days in Maryland make full suits HOT. Many times, we will be outside for over an hour, walking to several different spots in the city. Choose comfort first.
